Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night, the first part of the anime feature film project based on the reboot series that retells the first arc of the original Sword Art Online novel series by Reki Kawahara, ranked eighth in its seventh weekend, bringing its total to 1.32 billion yen (11.62 million USD).
The 97-minute has become the eighth top-grossing Japanese anime film of this year so far. The film's box office performance to date is about 52 percent of the total domestic gross of the SAO anime franchise's first feature film Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale released in February 2017. The first -Progressive- film is expected to end its domestic run with around 1.4 billion yen (12.32 billion USD). The second part is scheduled to be released in Japan sometime in 2022.
The live-action feature film adaptation of Fumi Yoshinaga (Antique Bakery, Ooku: The Inner Chambers)'s Kinou Nani Tabeta? / What Did You Eat Yesterday? was down three positions to ninth in its sixth weekend. Its total domestic gross has reached 1.28 billion yen (11.26 million USD) to become the fifth top-grossing live-action film based on Japanese manga this year so far.
Sayonara, Tyrano / My Tyrano: Together, Forever, which is based on the 11th book of Tatsuya Miyanishi's "Tyrannosaurus" picture book series, was released in 63 theaters across Japan on December 10, 2021, and didn't appear in the box office top 10 in its debut weekend. The Koubun Shizuno (Detective Conan film series, Knights of Sidonia)-directed film was originally slated for the early summer of 2020, but had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
