As we get into the tail end of the spring 2022 anime season, it’s becoming clear which shows have pierced through the gluttony of the series’ being released right now and stand at the top – with what seems like the world’s favorite anime family standing tall above the rest.
GEM Partners, which collects data from 7,000 Japanese people aged between 16 and 69 per week, have tallied up the most popular series’ watched on Japanese streaming service (so not just anime) and have quantified what is the most popular franchise in Japan right now. The streaming services looked at include Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, U-NEXT, Hulu Japan, Disney+, docomo anime store, dTV, ABEMA Premium and Paravi.
9. 007 / James Bond
5. Ya Boy Kongming!
4. One Piece
2. Case Closed / Detective Conan
1. SPY x FAMILY
After SPY x FAMILY came in second last month. it’s no surprise that the lovable Forgers have taken first place, dethroning the ever-popular Case Closed / Detective Conan from its first-place spot despite the franchise’s 25th film The Bride of Halloween currently still in theaters in Japan.
Ya Boy Kongming! has finally made it into the top 10, overtaking the behemoths Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Attack on Titan. The surprise hit of the season was in 12th place in April, so rising to 5th just shows how popular the Twelves Kingdoms but in modern-day Shibuya concept is.
