Seeing the announcement of a sequel for your favorite anime series is one of the best feelings in the world. But what are the major factors behind a series getting a sequel? Although, the sales and popularity of anime worldwide do matter a lot, but one of the major factors that the production committee considers is how popular is the anime among Japanese fans. Because the primary audience for anime is in fact the Japan.
A popular Japanese streaming website, Anime! Anime! recently conducted a survey among its subscribers, asking them the question: “What anime would you like to hear an announcement of a new season?”. It was also specified that fans could only those series which have not gotten a sequel announcement till April 14, 2022. The survey was conducted between April 14 to April 21, achieving a participation of 2208 Japanese fans. The male-female ration is about 45% males and 55% females.
The first place was won by Haikyuu! anime series. This volleyball sports anime series has already received 4 anime season, with the 4th season being release in 2020, fans are desperately waiting for season 5 announcement. One of the participants commented “The manga series is already completed, so I want you to animate this series until the final chapter”.
The 2nd place was won by Millionaire Detective Balance: Unlimited anime series. This series is animated by studio CloverWorks, and only got 1 season so far, which was released in 2020. The series is about a personal detective, Daisuke Kambe who uses his extreme wealth to solve cases.
The Yuri genre is also gaining more and more popularity among Japanese fans as the 3rd place was won by a Yuri anime, Bloom Into You. This anime series has only got 1 season so far which was released in 2018. The series tells the story of 2 high school girls, and the relationship that develops between them as the story progresses.
The 4th place is also won by a Yuri anime series, Adachi and Shimamura. The series is about 2 high school girls, Adachi and Shimamura who became friends. Adachi has romantic feelings for Shimamura but she has trouble expressing them, while Shimamura feels like Adachi is just a friend to her. This light novel series has gotten only 1 season anime adaptation, which was released in 2020.
